August 2008 Newsletter

Hello students and friends of LifeFit,

Hope you all have had a great summer - we must all be having FUN!...time is flying!

Below is an excerpt from the August newsletter of one of my teachers, Aadil Palkhivala.  I would like to add that the ideal of being clean in a sacred place is evident in so many religions and shows in so many many ways:   in how we all ready ourselves for entering where we worship, how Muslims go through washing face, hands and feet before each of the five times of prayer daily, where we get the phrase "in our Sunday best," how we are washed in water in baptism, and how we relay "cleanliness is next to Godliness."  You all can probably come up with so many more examples of how we show respect through cleanliness in practices of faith.   The practice of removing one's shoes before entereing a yoga class rests on the same princlples of cleanliness and respect and goes further to show simplicity, humbleness, to"come as you are" to a group practice, unassuming and unpretentious.

With that in mind, I would like to suggest that anyone interested in spending time helping "spruce up" our yoga practice space at CUMC, room 216 come ready for a three-part activity.  On Friday Aug 15 at 9:45am I will offer a yoga class free of charge to all my students who can come (please contact me as the limit is 15 people).  We will practice first and then do some "spring cleaning" in that room.  Though the sextons at the church work nonstop, alot of what gets managed at CUMC depends on volunteerism, just like in any church.  Many sets of hands working  will get the jobs done quickly!  Then comes a  potluck lunch!

The Tues/Thurs 11:00 am general exercise class at CUMC will meet the 2nd and 4th weeks of August.  During the third week of August, our room 216 will be used by church volunteers to work on a cloth labryinth.  Anyone interested in taking part?  This will be a collaborative effort over several days to sew, stencil and paint a design toward a finished product which will be 24 feet in diameter.  This cloth labryinth will be used in many ways for years to come, within the church and hopefully as an outreach to the community.  Please consider coming to help.  The church Messenger(newsletter) and the church office (299-1571) will have the work schedule.  If you have not experienced walking a labryinth, the nature of the design allows you to:  "shed" and "ask" as you walk the path to the center, "receive" in the center, and "incorporate" on your path back to the periphery.  There are many more possibilities to one's experience walking the labryinth.  It has been used for centuries as a spiritual tool and an avenue for prayer. This is a great stepping stone toward the establishment of the outdoor labryinth which will be built on the church grounds, and will be open to the public.

The 9:45 Tues/Thurs and the 5:15 Sunday Yoga/Pilates classes will resume the week after Labor Day.  The 12:15 Thurs Chair Yoga class will begin its next 8 week session on the Thursday after Labor Day too!  All students need to register/confirm their place in class in this month of August.

A Sacred Home  Nutrition May 2008

In Japan and in India, there is always a tap or a flowing fountain outside the temple, the dojo, or the sacred place. Why? So that all who enter can first wash their hands to show respect for the sacred place by keeping the energy of the place clean. Our homes are sacred places. This is why we always remove our shoes and wash our hands when we enter our homes. Making this a habit will help you separate the craziness of the outer world from the sanctity of your home.

Hang five

This five-part meditation was developed by senior teachers at Kripalu Center. It's a powerful invitation to connect with the present when you're calm, and an amazing aid when you're upset.

By Jonathan Foust

BREATHE  How much can you feel your breath right now? Focusing on your breathing is an essential practice that draws your awareness inward and helps you experience the presence and flow of energy.

Take a few slow, deep breaths and notice how each one moves through you.

How much do your lungs and belly expand on the inhalation and soften on the exhalation? As you become absorbed in your breathing, you'll be more aware of the sensations surrounding the rising and falling of your belly. You'll notice the sensation of breath moving through your lungs and trachea.

As you deepen your focus, you'll notice the flow of air moving through the sinus cavities in your head. You'll feel the breath moving through your nostrils. You may even notice that one nostril is more open than the other.

In your own time, shift your concentration from controlling your breath to simply watching your body breathe. Is the sensation of the breath predominant in one area—the belly, the throat, the nostrils?

Rest your awareness on one particular area of the breath, and when you notice your mind wandering, bring it back again and again to the direct experience of your body breathing in this moment.

RELAX  How much more can you relax right now? Relax the muscles of your face. Relax your lips and tongue. Relax your throat and neck. Relax your shoulders and arms, elbows and palms. Relax your belly and lower back. Relax your hips, knees, ankles. Relax the soles of your feet.

The more you relax, the more you deepen awareness of sensation. As you release your awareness into your body, observe who you are as a being of energy.

FEEL  How much more can you feel right now? Feel the points of contact between your body and your cushion or chair. Feel the vibration of the sounds around you. Feel the texture and temperature of the air touching your skin.

As you focus on feeling, you may find areas of tension, stagnation, or congestion. You may encounter surprisingly strong new sensations. See if you can soften around those areas.

Let your sense of feeling move beyond physical sensation. Feel your heart and the state of your emotional body. Sense the general feeling tone of your body and the quality of presence. Acknowledge who you are as a being of energy.

WATCH  What are you noticing right now? As you breathe, relax, and feel, invoke a quality of spacious awareness. Sense who you are as a witness; be a scientist observing phenomena arising in and around you.

Notice the rational mind that serves to compare, judge, and seek understanding, and in your own way notice the quality of awareness beyond the rational mind.

ALLOW  How much more can you allow your experience to be exactly what it is? What would happen if you added nothing to this moment and renounced the need to change anything?

Awareness has been described as a vast, spacious sky. Feelings, thoughts, and sensations constantly change form and shape like weather patterns passing through.

Sense who you are with no preferences. Be present to the process of your life unfolding moment by moment.
