Lifefit Newsletter March 2010

Greetings LifeFit Yogis and Friends,

“In every delay there is a blessing,” my mother quoted to me this old Arabic saying, recently after arriving back to the USA, two days late from a trip to Damascus, to help family cope with a death.  Her blessing was seeing a brother from Baghdad who had come to Syria for medical needs and she was there to be able to help in an unexpected way – she was thrilled to have yet another chance to help and see family.  This month my newsletter is well delayed and I have had many blessings in working with church members on our play, Children of Eden, a Broadway style show (runs March 11 – 13  go to christgreensboro.org and look under events), which brings to life the stories from the book of Genesis from Adam/Eve to Noah.  I get to see my husband and our daughter practice and perform (they each have solos) every night, I get to work with my good friend and sewing genius Liz,  and I get to know this second family, “our church,” a little better.  My newsletter has been rolling around in my head and every few days there has been a change of info that has led me to realize that the delay is indeed a blessing as what I need to tell you has evolved.

Lifefit classes are all on a roll now, with spaces in all classes – the springtime calls a few folks away.   The Sat and Monday morning small groups in my home studio need a couple more to be able to get started.  The CUMC classes get to stay put through April 11 as the new building process is allowing us that consistency.  There will be no classes the week before Easter,  March 29 – April 4.  I will attend a weekend workshop this month with Bryan Legere, founder of the “Great Yoga Wall,” and for those of you who do work with me at my home studio, we will get to move well forward in our practice with regard to wallwork!  There is a time for everything!

Words from the Yoga Journal as we have been talking about meeting our “edge” in practice recently in classes:

Yoga has been called a "breath practice" by many experienced yogis. That's partially because many styles of yoga link breathing  and moving. But it's also because the breath can reveal the truth about our condition, even when the external form of the body does not. The breath never lies!

When we practice yoga, our hope is to approach our edge in each pose, while keeping focused and centered, with the breath full and steady throughout. If you're ever unsure whether you're doing too much or not enough, listen to your breath. If you can't keep breathing evenly in a posture, it's a signal that you should back off to a simpler version of the asana—or take a rest.

This is also true of our daily lives. When you find yourself feeling tense, stressed, or overworked, try checking in with your breath. If it's even, calm, and rhythmic, then you're probably going to be OK. If it's choppy, short, and strained, then take a break, find a moment of relaxation, and wait for it to return to normal.

Words form the final piece in “Children of Eden,”  “For every moment of our life is the beginning.”

Let us intentionally put that into our practice and our daily lives.

Blessings to you all,

Mona Flynn
